The Dark Web offers true anonymity and freedom of speech. Examples of this are:
Personal stories: Survivors of abuse can discuss their experiences, name their aggressors, or console their peers who would otherwise feel uncomfortable talking about their experiences.
Evasion and Social Networking: Some countries subjugate their citizens on an arbitrary basis, including sexuality or religion. People can form communities in a less policed or moderated forum, where they can share information or plan to meet up in person. On this respect, the dark web can be used to avoid persecution. The dark web contains a host of "DSN's" or dark social networks that are not montiored by advertising companies and are usually user-led sites. Robert Gehl claims that these sites are "experiment [s] in power/freedom, an attempt to trace, deploy, and overcome the historical conditions in which it finds itself."
Literature: Access to books can also be restricted for a variety of factors, and the dark web offers plenty of opportunities to read books that may either be doctored or entirely prohibited in the analog world. For billions of people, access through the open web is restricted, leaving only one option.
Markets: The dark web offers access to illicit goods, including weapons, drugs, counterfeits and pornography. This activity is "criminal" by definition, but that's doesn't prevent their "positive uses." These markets introduce a new currency: Bitcoin, which is the most popular currency at the time. Although there are critics of Bitcoin, it is "fully decentralized" currency not instituted by anyone government, federal reserve or banking system making it a purely new form of currency with a strong value on Dark Web markets.
